Percent dilution calculator

Three percent notations. v/v is volume in volume. w/v is grams in 100 ml. w/w is grams in 100 g. They are not interchangeable without density.

§ 1Definitions

  • % v/v · ml of solute per 100 ml of total solution. 70 % v/v ethanol = 70 ml ethanol topped up to 100 ml with water.
  • % w/v · g of solute per 100 ml of total solution. 1 % w/v NaCl = 10 g per litre.
  • % w/w · g of solute per 100 g of total solution. 98 % w/w H₂SO₄ is the concentrated lab acid.

IUPAC notes that volume fraction and mass fraction differ when solute and solvent have different densities.[6]

§ 2Worked example · 70 % v/v from 96 % IMS

C₁V₁=C₂V₂ with C₁ = 96, C₂ = 70, V₂ = 500 ml: V₁ = (70 × 500) ÷ 96 = 364.6 ml of IMS. Top up to 500 ml with water. Result: 70 % v/v bench disinfectant.
